Before you load the car

Bring a blanket — lawn seating fills up first on a warm afternoon, and the shaded tables go early. Pack water and snacks for the kids even where there is food, since kitchens on this trail run on their own schedule. Go earlier in the day: rooms are quieter, the staff has more time, and the heat has not set in. And call ahead if the weather looks uncertain, because most of what makes these stops work is outside.
